Darvocet/Darvon Painkiller Lawsuit

Darvocet/Darvon (propoxyphene/acetaminophen) are narcotics that have been used to treat moderate to mild pain, such as the short-term pain often felt after a surgery.  They have also been used for controlling long-term pain.  The FDA issued a recall of Darvocet/Darvon and other painkillers containing propoxyphene because it was determined that the drug could cause serious changes in the rhythm of the heart and may lead to other dangerous injuries such as overdose and suicide.  This drug has purportedly caused between one and two thousand deaths since 2005 in the United States.

The manufacturer, Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, complied with the November 2010 recall, which was based on evidence that one of the Darvocet/Darvon side affects was that it altered the electrical activity of the heart.  The altered electrical activity caused arrhythmia and heart attacks, as well as sudden death.  It was determined that the benefits the drug provided in reducing pain were not great enough to outweigh the Darvocet/Darvon side effects.  As public awareness of the Darvocet/Darvon side effects increased, Darvocet/Darvon lawsuits began to be filed.

The Darvocet/Darvon side effects were reported in the past, and the drug was actually banned in the U.K. in 2005, but remained available in the United States.  In 2008 a consumer group filed a lawsuit against the FDA for failing to act on a 2006 petition to ban the drug.  The first U.S. petition for recall of the drug was filed in 1978.
