Six Confirmed Deaths in Georgia Sugar Plant Explosion

The explosion that rocked an Imperial Sugar processing plant in Port Wentworth, Ga. last week has claimed a confirmed six lives, with two workers still missing among the rubble in places rescue crews are still unable to reach. More than 30 people were also taken to hospitals, where many were in critical condition.

Preliminary results from a joint local and federal investigation team which includes personnel from the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) blame combustible sugar dust for causing the explosion. The Port Wentworth factory’s last inspection was in late October of 2007, when it was cited for two violations.
